Were you involved with organized sports prior to bodybuilding? If yes, how did it help transition you to bodybuilding and what similarities were there?
Yes. Prior to bodybuilding I always enjoyed living a active lifestyle. I loved to run outside on the trails and I also played basketball in school from grades 5-12. After I graduated from high school I fell in love with hot yoga.My transition into bodybuilding followed after yoga and it happened because I was looking for another way to challenge my body and try something new. I feel like all sports and physical activities take a certain amount of discipline and mental toughness, and to compete in bodybuilding that is exactly what the sport requires. So for me the similarities would be the discipline and mental toughness it takes to be successful as an athlete.

Every athlete has something that keeps them motivated. What keeps you on top of your game?
Personal development and never growing stagnant is what always keeps me at the top of my game. I like to challenge myself and strive to be a better me. I always maintain a healthy amount of personal dissatisfaction. I love to learn and I love to grow and I like to try new things. I also like to lead from the back. I want to see more people be the best version of themselves and the only way I can inspire others, is by living the lifestyle and always setting the example first.

For those who don’t know, Nicole is a firm believer in mental strength above all else. Tell us how your practices influence your approach to training and everyday life.
With mental toughness you can literally do anything. Our perception is our reality. I stay mentally tough by always “sharpening my axe”. I practice a strict morning routine, which sets up my thoughts and day for success. Every morning I meditate, read, write in my journal, set goals, workout and listen to positive audio. These practices shape my entire day. When I do these things, I allow myself to get into a peak state, which has a ripple effect into the rest of my day. The ripple effect is extreme focus and extreme positivity. You can’t go wrong when you prime your day with the right mindset. And of course with the right state and the right thoughts, training just amplifies those amazing feelings and every workout gets smashed.

Did you always have this approach or did someone or something give you a different perspective?
No I didn’t always have this approach. I used to have a lot of negative thoughts and people in my life…but then i realized that i had total control over both of those things so I decided to make some changes. The last few years of my life have been a lot about self discovery and growth. I had to take a deep look at myself and personal thoughts and actions and also my associations. My self talk and associations have transformed drastically since I started bodybuilding. I only acknowledge certain thoughts and I only allow certain people into my life. I only allow energy giving thoughts and people into my life. If something doesn't inspire me or make me want to be better and do better as a person, then its gotta go.

What advice would you give for someone who is starting out in competition and training?
Nothing is black and white. There are multiple ways to skin a cat. If something doesn’t work the first time, keep going. Don’t be afraid to work hard and try new things and figure out what works best for you and your body and your lifestyle.

Living a healthy lifestyle takes discipline and a lot of adversity usually comes from yourself. What advice would you give to someone who is seeking to establish a stronger frame of mind?
I would say never give up on yourself and your dreams.Trust the process. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable . Allow yourself to work hard & grind, and trust in the fact that invisible results are taking place as long as your wiling to put in the work. No one will reach your goals for you, so NEVER GIVE UP, you can do this. Failure is fiction. Look at every obstacle as a lesson, an another reason to learn and grow. Every time you level up in life, its going to take another version of yourself, don’t hold on to what isn’t serving you anymore, and embrace the evolving YOU!

What does free time look like for you?
I live a very blessed life and I only do what I love. I honestly feel like all of my time is free because I run my day... but I have 4 main areas that take control of my life: My faith, my family, my fitness and my finances. So in my free time, I am paying attention to whichever one of those areas that needs a little more love.

What is the most life changing quote you know of?
Hmmm… I seriously love a good quote. But sometimes keeping it simple is best: “If its to be, its up to me” (My circumstances equals my actions).

Bloopers. We all lover bloopers. What was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you at the gym?
Hmm….that's a tough one (because in reality I don’t really care, haha) but I’ve worn my pants inside out and backwards and I've nailed myself in the head with cables once or twice!
